Lasik Eye Surgery In Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Overview

LASIK eye surgery is one of the most popular vision correction procedures around the world. LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses) is considered a viable alternative to eyeglasses or contact lenses. During LASIK surgery, a special type of laser is used to precisely change the shape of the clear tissue at the front of your eye (the cornea) to improve vision.

When the eyes have normal vision, the cornea accurately bends or refracts the light onto the retina at the back of the eye. But with near-sightedness, far-sightedness, or astigmatism, the cornea refracts the light incorrectly, causing blurred vision.

Why is LASIK surgery performed?

LASIK surgery may be an option to correct the following vision problems:

  • Near-sightedness (myopia). When the eyeball is slightly longer than normal, or when the cornea has a sharp curve, the light rays are focused in front of the retina and blur the distant vision. In this case, you can see close objects more clearly, but you cannot see things that are far away.
  • Far-sightedness (hyperopia). When the eyeball is shorter than normal or the cornea has a flatter curve, the light is focused behind the retina rather than on it. The near vision, and sometimes also distant vision.
  • Astigmatism. When the cornea is convex or unevenly flat, astigmatism occurs, which impedes the focus of near and far vision.

LASIK surgery is not suitable for the following:

  • People with thin corneas.
  • People with rapidly worsening vision problems.
  • People with various eye diseases, such as cataracts, eye infections, chronic dry eyes, keratoconus, and glaucoma.
  • People with diabetes.
  • pregnant women.

How to prepare for LASIK surgery?

Long-term LASIK results tend to be better in people whose condition is carefully evaluated before surgery to ensure that they are suitable candidates for the procedure.

If you wear contact lenses, which can alter the cornea shape, you will need to completely stop wearing them and only wear your eyeglasses for at least a few weeks before the evaluation and surgery. Our ophthalmologist will provide you with specific instructions based on the type of contact lens you wear and how long you wear them.

During the evaluation, your doctor will ask about your medical and surgical history and will have a thorough eye exam to assess your vision and assess whether you can have the procedure safely.

During the exam, the doctor will check for any signs of:

  • Inflammation
  • Eye infection
  • Dilated pupils
  • High eye pressure
  • Dry eyes

Moreover, the doctor will examine your cornea to check its shape and thickness and look for abnormalities. After that, they will evaluate the areas that require reshaping and determine the exact amount of tissue that needs to be removed from the cornea.

Before the surgery, our ophthalmologist will explain the procedure and what you can expect before and after the surgery and will answer all your questions.

What does LASIK surgery involve?

LASIK surgery is an outpatient procedure and is usually done in 30 minutes. During the procedure, you lie on your back in a special chair, and the ophthalmologist may give you some medications to help you relax.

After the doctor put numbing drops in your eyes, they use an instrument to keep your eyelids open.

A suction ring placed over your eye before the corneal flap is cut may cause a feeling of pressure, and your vision may become slightly blurred.

Our eye surgeon uses a small blade or laser to cut a small flap and fold it away from the front of your eye. Folding the flap back allows the surgeon to access the part of the cornea to reshape it.

Using a programmed laser beam, our surgeon can reshape sections of the cornea. With each pulse of the laser beam, a small amount of corneal tissue is removed. After reshaping the cornea, the surgeon returns the flap to its place. The flap usually heals without sutures.

During surgery, you will be asked to focus on a specific point. Staring at this point helps you keep your eyes still while the laser reshapes the cornea.

If you need to have LASIK surgery in both eyes, the doctor is likely to perform the procedure on the same day.

What to expect after LASIK surgery?

Immediately after surgery, your eye may feel an itch or a burning sensation in your eye, and it may produce more tears. You will probably have blurred vision. The discomfort will improve quickly, and you will recover your clear vision gradually.

You may be given pain medication or eye drops to help you feel comfortable after the procedure. Your ophthalmologist may also ask you to wear special protective glasses until your eye heals completely.

You will be able to see after surgery, but your vision will not be clear immediately. It takes approximately two to three months after surgery before your eyes are completely healed and your vision is stabilized.

You will have a follow-up appointment with your ophthalmologist one or two days after surgery. They will check the improvement of the healing process and check for any complications. More follow-up appointments are needed during the first six months after surgery to make sure the recovery is going without any problems.

It may take a few weeks before you start using cosmetics around your eyes again. You may also have to wait several weeks before resuming violent contact sports, swimming, or using a hot tub.

What is the result of LASIK surgery?

LASIK often provides improved vision without the hassle of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses. In general, you have a good chance of achieving a vision strength of 20/25 or better after refractive surgery.

Over 8 out of 10 people who undergo LASIK refractive surgery no longer need to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to do most of their activities.

The results of your surgery depend on your refractive error and other factors. People with mild near-sightedness often have more successful results from refractive surgery. On the other hand, people with severe far-sightedness or near-sightedness along with astigmatism have less predictable results.
