Arthroscopic Surgery in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

 Overview

Arthroscopy is a procedure that allows doctors to diagnose and treat a range of joint problems, most commonly those affecting the knee, shoulder, ankle, hip, or wrist. This procedure is performed by inserting pencil-thin surgical instruments through small incisions to see inside your joint and repair the joint damage.

The most common conditions that are treated with arthroscopic procedures include:

  • Loose pieces of bone or cartilage
  • Rotator cuff tendon tears
  • Meniscal tears
  • Joint inflammation
  • Torn ligaments

What to expect before arthroscopic surgery?

During your consultation, our orthopedic specialist will go over your medical history and ask about any medications you are taking. They may request an X-ray, Ultrasound, or CT scan to determine whether arthroscopic surgery is suitable for you.

The specifics of your preparations will vary depending on which of your joints the surgeon will be examining. You should avoid drinking or eating 8 hours before your arthroscopy and arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

What happens during arthroscopic surgery?

The orthopedic surgeon will determine the type of anesthetic you will receive depending on the suspected condition and affected joint. They will insert an arthroscope through a small incision and inject the joint with sterile fluid to see inside it.

They may insert additional surgical tools through other small incisions to cut, shave, and remove damaged tissues and then close the incisions with stitches.

What to expect after arthroscopic surgery?

Your doctor will prescribe pain medication if you experience joint pain after the procedure. Recovery time is determined by the joint affected and the procedure performed. You may be able to resume light activity after a few days but will need to longer before doing strenuous exercise.
