Knee Replacement Surgery in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Overview

Knee replacement, also known as total knee replacement or knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that can help correct leg deformities and restore function in damaged knee joints.

Knee replacement surgery involves replacing the damaged bone and cartilage of the knee with a knee prosthetic made of metal and plastic.

At Novomed, our orthopedic specialists will determine whether a knee replacement is suitable for you based on the assessment of your knee’s range of motion, stability, and strength and may use X-rays to help determine the extent of the damage.

The choice of knee replacement prostheses and surgical techniques will depend on your age, weight, activity level, knee size and shape, and overall health.

Why would I need knee replacement surgery?

If you have severe pain in your knee, you may find it difficult to do simple activities such as walking and climbing stairs. The knee joint can be affected by various types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, which causes the degradation of joint cartilage, and rheumatoid arthritis, which causes pain and stiffness.

A knee replacement help resurface damaged areas of the knee joint and reduce knee discomfort that can’t be improved with non-surgical treatments.

What to expect before knee replacement surgery?

To determine if knee replacement surgery is suitable for you, our orthopedic doctor will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and run some imaging tests to inspect the knee joint and evaluate its range of motion and strength.

You will need to avoid eating anything after midnight on the day before the procedure. You will also need to arrange for someone to drive you home and help you around the house after the surgery.

What are the types of knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes around 1 to 3 hours. Our orthopedic surgeon will determine the best treatment option for you based on the state of your knee and your overall health.

The different types of knee replacement knee surgeries include:

  •  Total knee replacement

Total knee replacement involves replacing both sides of the knee joint. During the surgery, the joint surface at the end of your thigh bone (femur) and the joint surface at the top of your shin bone (tibia) are both replaced with prosthetic components.

In most cases, our surgeon will cement the new parts in place. If no cement is used, the component’s surface facing the bone is coated to enable the bone to grow onto it and form a natural attachment.

  •  Partial knee replacement

If your arthritis affects only one side of your knee, a partial knee replacement may be an option to remove and replace it with a prosthetic. Compared to total knee replacements, partial knee replacements require a smaller incision, shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery.

  • Kneecap replacement

This procedure allows repairing a damaged knee joint while keeping the healthy parts of your knee.

A kneecap replacement is an option when the underside of the kneecap and its groove are the only parts affected by arthritis. This procedure involves resurfacing the damaged bone and cartilage at the end of the thigh bone to fit the prosthetic joint. The implanted joint is usually attached in place with bone cement.

  • Revision knee replacement

A knee revision involves replacing prosthetic implants in patients who previously had a total knee replacement.

During this procedure, some or all original prosthetic implants are removed and replaced with new ones made of metal or plastic to support the damaged bones.

What to expect after knee replacement surgery?

After the procedure, you may need to stay at the hospital for a couple of days. Our doctor will give you medications to help ease pain and discomfort. They will also recommend that you do physical therapy until you regain your muscular strength and range of motion.

You will be able to resume regular activities after 3 to 6 weeks but will need around six months to recover fully. After you have recovered, you will notice an improvement in your joint mobility. Your knee replacement result will most likely last at least 15 years.
