What are the diseases that can be treated through Colorectal Surgery (Proctology)?

Treated diseases can vary in their etiology and severity. Proctology mainly treats benign diseases such as diverticulitis (bumps from the stomach wall that can inflame and cause diverticulosis), ischemic colitis (conditional inflammation with lack of oxygen supply) and chronic enteritis such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Colon polyps, known as colorectal polyps, are mostly benign and are prominent protrusion of the intestinal membrane, but may sometimes have earlier indications (colorectal adenomas) of the colon and rectum. There are also pathological syndromes within the family, accompanied by large intestine polyps and a high risk of abnormalities (cancer risk);for example, familial adenomatous polyposis. Growth errors, hernia and injuries can also be treated through colorectal surgery.

Diseases of the anal canal, such anal fissures, anal fistula and hemorrhoids are often one of the topics of proctology.

What are the treatment methods available in Colorectal Surgery?

Therapeutic options can be characterized depending on whether the disease is malignant or benign, the intestine is still intact or can be restored, or a temporary or permanent prosthesis outlet should be made.

There are conservative laparoscopic methods, non-surgical therapeutic options, that can be performed only through the intestine, in addition to laparoscopic keyhole technique and open surgeries.

The amount that can be preserved from the intestine is related to the supply of blood and lymphatic drainage and, above all, the type of disease.
